Monterey, Calif. (April 15, 2005) - Today's circuit race stage of the
Sea Otter Classic's Sierra Nevada/Kodak Gallery Road Stage Race proved
to be a difficult test for the Kodak EasyShare Gallery/Sierra Nevada Professional
Cycling Team.
Things started out well, with Ben Jacques-Maynes, who started the day
in 6th overall after yesterday's prologue, initiating what proved to be
the winning breakaway. The group included Ben's Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada
teammate Jackson Stewart.
With approximately ten laps remaining, Chris Wherry (Health Net-Maxxis)
forced a split at the top of the Laguna Seca raceway's 300-ft climb and
neither Jacques-Maynes nor Stewart made it across to the lead group.
Jacques-Maynes fell back to a chase group that stayed within a minute
of the Health Net-driven lead group, but eventually fell back to the pack
as the field disintegrated into small groups on the hilly, windy circuit.
At the finish, Ivan Stevic of the amateur Aerospace Engineering team outsprinted
Wherry and the rest of the lead group.
Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada Racing Manager Robin Zellner said after the
finish, "If this the worst day we have all year, I'll be happy. It
was a hard one for us, but all our guys finished and we'll have another
go tomorrow."
