Macon,
Georgia (April 19, 2005) - After a long, slow stage, the Kodak Gallery/Sierra
Nevada Professional Cycling Team placed three riders in the lead group
of roughly 50 riders, including Glen Mitchell and Dominique Perras, Kodak
Gallery/Sierra Nevada's two best hopes for a top ten overall finish.
Russell Hamby also finished in the front group, and the team's remaining
four riders - Ben Jacques-Maynes, Jackson Stewart, Hayden Godfrey, and
Scott Zwizanski finished in the second group, which lost about 20 seconds
to the leaders.
For most of the 129-mile stage, a lethargic, sprinter-laden pack showed
little interest in chasing lone lead Dan Bowman (TIAA-CREF), whose lead
reached over 13 minutes at times.
"I'll be honest - it was boring out there," said Kodak Gallery/Sierra
Nevada's Jackson Stewart after the finish.
After a few short-lived breakaways in the closing miles, the expected
field sprint was won by Robert Hunter (Phonak), in front of Ben Brooks
(Jelly Belly) and Michele Maccanti (LPR).
Perhaps unexpected was the degree to which the field broke up in the final
miles, with a number of riders losing time during the three finishing
laps in downtown Macon.
