Waterbury,
Conn. (May 21, 2005) - "Today went according to plan," said
Kodak EasyShare Gallery/Sierra Nevada Racing Manager Robin Zellner after
Dominique Perras made the winning break in Stage 2 of the Tour of Connecticut,
placing fourth on the stage and taking the Climber's Jersey.
After the first few laps of the very difficult Waterbury Climbers' Cup
circuit race shattered the field, a lead group of roughly thirty riders
emerged, including Kodak Gallery/Sierra Nevada's Glen Mitchell and Ben
Jacques-Maynes in addition to Perras.
With four 4.1-mile laps remaining, Perras and overall leader Vasilli Davidenko
(Navigators Insurance) - who followed his win in last night's criterium
with a stage win today - bridged up to Davide Frattini (Colavita-Sutter
Home) and Davidenko's teammate, Chris Baldwin.
With strongman Baldwin driving the pace, the quartet's lead grew to 31
seconds at the finish, where Davidenko took an easy win from Frattini
and Baldwin. Perras finished fourth, but took the Climber's Jersey after
winning the final KOM sprint and placing second in the previous one.
Meanwhile, only sixteen riders made the final selection behind the breakaway
including Jacques-Maynes and Mitchell, who placed ninth and fourteenth
in the stage.
"I felt pretty good today and I'll try to be aggressive tomorrow,"
Perras commented after the race, "but Navigators is pretty well in
control."
