Boulder, CO (March 17, 2007) Before hundreds of enthusiastic on-lookers, Ben Raby of the Kodak Gallery Pro Cycling Team, presented by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. shaved the head of teammate Jesse Anthony to raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer treatment in Boulder, Colorado.
The St. Patrick's Day event was sponsored by the St. Baldrick's Foundation. What began eight years ago as a casual conversation between three Irish friends, has exploded into the world's biggest volunteer-driven fundraising program for childhood cancer! Events have taken place in 10 countries and 42 US states, raising over $20 million, and shaving more than 26,000 heads.
It did not take long for the aerodynamic benefit of Jesse's new haircut became apparent. Just hours after his shearing, Jesse won the field sprint to take 5th place in the pro field of the Colorado University Criterium behind a breakaway of four led by HealthNet's Carl Menzies and Tim Johnson. One spectator at the race was overheard commenting on the new likeness between Jesse and Carl Menzies, "That must be Carl Jr.!"
